Hello everyone,
To improve navigation and guidance in 5 cities of Canada, we embarked on
two mapping sprints to map turn restrictions, exit numbers and destination
signages using Mapillary images. In total, 423 new turn restrictions, 197
ref tags to motorway_junction nodes, 116 destinations, 277
destination:streets, 181 destination:refs were mapped using Mapillary as
the primary source over the last 30 days. For those that missed out, the
whole project and mapping methodology has been documented on these Github
tickets as a reference for similar projects in future [1],[2]. Here's our
diary post [3] for more info.
A special thank you to the Canadian mapping community for the positive
response and encouragement during the whole mapping effort. We have had
quick and friendly responses through comments on our diary posts, comments
on our mapping tickets on Github and talk-ca replies setting a wonderful
example of how mappers around the world can work together to build a great
map on OSM. We hope to visit Canada one day and have field mapping day with
you :)
As always, we take feedback seriously on our mapping workflows,
documentation and how we can do this better with improved Mapillary and
OpenStreetView coverages in future. The goal is for the best map in the
world, and our team is happy to support with mapping, documentation and
building tools with the community to achieve this. Feel free to get in
touch with anyone in our team or post on our Github repository to share
your ideas.
Best,
Data team at Mapbox
