[Talk-ca] Revisiting exits with “names” in Ontario and Quebec

Ontario is like California when it comes to signing exit numbers; it's very inconsistent. Some freeways do not have exit numbers at all (Highway 409, Highway 427 although it's getting them very soon), and a lot of them did not have any until very recently like the Gardiner and DVP. This is why we refer to exits by their names.

It's not only a problem in 400-series highway, Toronto expressway and Quebec autoroute exits. I have also seen "names" on interchanges and right-in, right-outs on other Ontario highways like Highway 11 between Barrie and North Bay, and Highway 115 between Newcastle and Peterborough, as well as other freeway and expressway-grade roads elsewhere (e.g. part of Highbury Ave connecting with the 401 in London, the Red Hill Valley Parkway around Hamilton).

Yes, those "names" are largely map clutter especially in urban areas and where multiple values are used. There is no problem with navigation instructions, and it's becoming clear "names" are mostly an attempt to make exit destinations visible at the expense of other information, especially at closer zoom levels.

Jherome,

It may not be a tagging for the renderer issue, but it also has something to do with Ontarians saying “(road name) exit” instead of “exit (number)” as in Western Canada. Don't know how do Québécois refer to autoroute exits.
