I'd also be happy with water (even though I'm still slogging through
FHRS data)
One thing which needs agreement is the tagging of areas of water,
especially the waterway banks:

This is appears to be the accepted method although a few do still advocate:

In GB, riverbank outnumbers water=river greatly:

http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org.uk/tags/water=river#overview
But I'm not convinced it's a valid reason not to improve the data.
