My understanding is that legal ownership often extends to the centre of 
the carriageway.  Adoption is only skin deep, and I'm not sure that it 
is actually reflected in Land Registry records.

I guess if they had to make a compulsory purchase, to widen the road, 
the council might end up with ownership.
