I guess mapillary have not yet got their machine learning to identify them reliably yet? Have you got a point of contact with anyone at mapillary?

This sounds interesting. Pic4review uses mapillary and other sources for refining tags and is very useful. It’s less great at adding new items though. 

Single photos likely won’t have a bearing information which might be tricky if there’s ambiguity.

Definitely sounds worthwhile to me.
