The term "profit" is perhaps a bit loaded.

Assume you have a balanced budget and you're on track to spending all
the money you receive in one calendar year.

Then on the 10th of December you receive a surprise donation of £20,000.

It is very unlikely that you will be able to make a good decision on how
to spend that money in the remaining few days of the year (decide what
you want, find the best vendor, get an offer, etc.).

And poof, you have made a "profit" in that year.

There exist some tax accounting methods that allow you to offset a
profit in one year against a loss in another but these are tightly
regulated.

It would probably be better to talk of a "surplus" and not a "profit".
