Taginfo shows:
man_made=gate_post (23)
man_made=gate_pillar (17)
man_made=gatepost (11)
man_made=gate_pier (6)
historic=gate_pier (9)
historic=gatepole (2)
historic=gate_post (1)

No obvious winner, and whatever you choose should get a decent boost. You
can of course use both man_made= and historic=. Given that Historic England
describes them as gate piers, perhaps man_made=gate_pier +
historic=gate_pier?

The barrier= tag should go on the (high)way that runs between them, not on
the gate pillars themselves, I would think. You could put
removed:barrier=gate at sites where the gate has been removed.

As these are listed they fall within the quarterly project of Tourism.
