A bit after the fact, unfortunately.
I have been thinking a bit about the alternative options in these cases and
I suspect gate pier may be a little obscure compared with gate post, cf
Torpfosten (https://dict.leo.org/german-english/gatepost) whereas a
suitable translation for pier - Stuetze - comes way down the set
of.meanings.
More positively I think gate_finial can be added as a secondary tag. Most
historic gate piers will have finials, ranging from simple spheres to more
elaborate ones including pineapples.
