[Talk-GB] Sewage Outfalls

Wastewater is the norm in the UK to cover all waste types.

Greywater is typically from baths/sinks/washing machines and in some localities is used extensively for irrigation.

Blackwater (what we generally call sewage) includes toilets etc.

At the outfall point or points there will often be a diffuser(s), especially on newer outfalls. Most outfalls will have some means of stopping backflow somewhere along their length. For older short outfalls this may be on the end as a flap valve.

I’ve been involved with a fair few long sea outfalls around the UK and elsewhere in my time so could help add a few where I know their location.

Cheers

Andy

Subject: [Talk-GB] Sewage Outfalls

As sewage outfalls are in the news at present it might be a good opportunity to map some of them, particularly those close to popular bathing beaches.

Tagging is still a little unsettled, but the following seems reasonable:

* The outfall pipe mapped as man_made=pipeline, substance=sewage (some existing pipes are mapped as man_made=outfall). There doesn't seem to be a consensus tag for "grey water", both waterwaste and wastewater having roughly equal usage. Overpass query showing current objects tagged with substance=sewage: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1cqG <https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1cqG>

* The end of the pipe mapped either as man_made=outfall <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:man_made%3Doutfall> or with the new outlet key <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Outlets_proposal> which is currently under discussion.

I'm open to other suggestions, and any other ideas for locating the outfalls.

Jerry
