Yes - I generally sympathise with concerns about tagging for the
renderer but in this case I find it incredibly flippant if it's likely
to endanger lives.
I don't believe any of the tagging suggestions made so far in this
thread will make any difference to how Strava (which I believe uses
Mapbox) renders this, so they're not really very helpful.
I think it would be worth approaching Strava about this, although I
wouldn't be especially hopeful for a response there. They should have
control over how their Mapbox map is styled.
If the choice is between tagging for the renderer or being complicit
in people injuring or even killing themselves for the sake of semantic
purity then please count me down as a fan of tagging for the renderer.
(Perhaps the least offensive method of which would be namespacing the
tag as dangerous:highway=path or similar, which would at least reduce
the chance of it being re-mapped.)
