The key thing about them are that they are an open system, unlike the
pretty much fully closed "what three words" and the semi-closed UK post
codes. As such it is desirable that they be encouraged relative to, in
particular, w3w.
(I suspect that w3w is a translation of latitude and longitude (with
maybe some special cases thrown in for important features), but the
encoding rules are kept secret.)
