It is a translation of latitude/longitude to words, the actual algorithm 
is [cough] available if you know where to look and it's not particularly 
complex (no more so than MapCode or OLC). The secret squirrel bit is the 
lookup table of translated ids to three-word combos. That's hardcoded in 
the app (so it works offline), but stored in binary form so it can't 
easily be reverse-engineered.
