I really didn't mean to side-track this thread, but after Jass's reply I found this website:

and if you zoom in to Elmstead Market and click on either the section I mentioned or the bit of Clacton Road to the east of the village centre crossroads, the map highlights both as a single road, with Colchester Road being the bit between the sections. It makes no sense to me that the western section of what it shows as Clacton Road would be called Clacton Road in Elmstead parish on the Colchester side as it is heading away from Clacton with respect to the village, but towards Colchester (based on how most roads seem to be named). 

I don't know which source is authoritative, but I would argue the highway authority have made a mistake when entering their data.
