I had been looking at using a 4 day interrail pass.

Day 1 UK - Cologne
Day 2 Cologne - Lodz

Return is the reverse, or buy more days and explore.

I used interrail for both Milan and Heidelberg and had interesting
adventures on the return leg. Shropshire to Milan is a long day.

One big plus for interrail is that it includes an outward and return
journey in the UK and includes expensive peak hour trains.
