I can also recommend the train journey between the UK and Poland, it's
one I've done regularly over the last few years. Depending on where
you start in the UK, your first day can end a little further on e.g.
Hannover or Berlin are good stopping points with cheap hotels near the
stations. It is, of course, a long time on trains, since Poland is a
fair old distance away.
The Interrail 4-day passes usually work out worthwhile. If you want to
do more travel in Poland then extra interrail days might not be worth
it, depending on your itinerary, since trains in Poland are pretty
cheap anyway.
I recommend using bahn.de for journey planning (and booking
reservations, if you want them, it's cheaper than using interrail for
the reservations) and seat61.com for journey overviews. As seat61
points out, there are various sleeper train options too.
Thanks,
Andy
