[Talk-gh] Existing Medium Voltage (MV) - Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Electric Grid

Hello,

Thank you very much. Much appreciated the link shared and the interest ☺

Unfortunately the map covers the medium-high transmission lines voltage. This information exists in GIS format as for instance the West African Power Pool (WAPP) collects this information annually for all ECOWAS countries.

It is the information on medium-low voltage lines which is more difficult to get and/or collect.

On www.ecowrex.org<http://www.ecowrex.org> you can see the countries for which we have some datasets on MV-LV lines. Indeed for Ghana we have some of them, but not for all the country.

Best regards,
Daniel

This should be of interest [1].

Hello Daniel,

Thanks for your mail and challenge. I believe very much in OSM :). OSM will need more hands and support on board to make it the number one got Free and Open Geo Database.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to get this information from the national utilities. In some cases, these datasets exist in shapefile but are not shared, in other these datasets don’t exist in GIS format files, etc.
We have a long way to go and it's our responsibility to start preaching about OSM and the importance of making geospatial data accessible to all.

Challenge accepted :). We will take a look into it and always our pleasure to help.
Best,

- Enock

Hi,

Increasing energy access in West Africa, and most specifically in rural areas, through the use of solar off-grid systems is going to become a reality in the next years.

Here at ECREEE, we are working in a project funded by the World Bank (ROGEP, Rural Off Grid Electrification Project) to support local and regional entrepreneurs and private sector to develop this market in West Africa.

To facilitate the energy planning, we are developing interactive data-driven maps. In these maps, one of the key datasets is the existing MV-LV distribution electric grid. Unfortunately, it is not easy to get this information from the national utilities. In some cases, these datasets exist in shapefile but are not shared, in other these datasets don’t exist in GIS format files, etc.

It would be great if the OSM communities in West African countries could map these MV-LV lines as it would be an enormous contribution to enrich the access to open datasets which are necessary for energy planning.

I do believe in OSM projects to make data available for everybody. When the official channel to make data open is slow, the change could come from the people…

Please, accept this email as a challenge.

Thank you for all contributions in OSM Ghana. OSM is becoming also a strong reality in West Africa, with many mappers and groups.

Best regards,
Daniel
