It seems to me that the current practice is to use highway=tertiary. But
this is not documented, and maybe there's even a problem with it... don't
know.

I agree. and this is important. All the information should be on the wiki.

It seems logical that both main city roads and 4 digit roads are tertiary.
But this is someone the others should also comment about.

Keeping a duplicate of the "Map Features" page is not a good idea, since it
is huge, and sometimes changes. Why bother syncing two huge pages? I think
we should strive to be using a "conventions & examples" page, that'll be an
addition to the "Map Features" page.
I prefer setting up a page with
1) very simple and clear instructions for behavior that differs from or not
clear when reading "Map Features" page. For example: how to choose the
correct tag for an intercity roads, how to choose the correct tag for a city
road, how tag street names.
2) short and easy examples for the above: (road 4 is tagged with
highway=xxx, weizman street is aaa=bbb)
3) A list of officially encouraged features. That would be features beyond
the absolute basic ones, that some of us are regularly trying to use, and
would like to see more use of it. My list would be:
a) traffic lights
b) bus stops (need to agree on a tag to mark the line numbers, and also
alighting only, etc info. it is not defined in "Map Features").
c) house numbers. [would even more important when we start routing on
hand-held devices]
d) parks, playgrounds [looks good on a rendered map...]
e) postoffice

I don't agree. I think that it might be a good idea to put on the Israeli
Wiki page something like:
"It might be illegal for Israeli citizens to map military buildings and
areas".
And maybe also:
"WikiProject_Israel encourages all osm users not to map millitary and
confidential areas in Israel".
I don't plan to enter this things myself, but if someone legally does it,
say a foreigner using a satellite image available under a proper license,
OpenStreetMap.org will have no problem rendering it and displaying it for
the world to see.

Once again, agree.
