Hi Jeffrey (and everyone),
I, too, am a little confused about this, and I want to do the Right Thing.
I was hoping for a few more subscribers before we started discussing important
matters, but I'll go with what we have. There are 7 members on this list.
If you know of anyone else mapping in Korea, please encourage them to sign
up.
Road classification is mentioned here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ko:Map_Features
and here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:highway
(about 3/4 down the page)
I would appreciate it if a Korean speaker could please translate the
Ko:Map_Features page into English, or at least add a few English sentences to
explain the reasons behind each road classification choice. Google translate
does a good job, but it's not *entirely* clear.
Unfortunately these two pages show different information. For example, the
Ko:Map_Features page doesn't mention 'trunk' roads, but the Key:highway page
does.
I am originally from the UK, and I studied Ordnance Survey maps in great
detail for a hobby of mine. My mapping ideas are affected by this
experience.
I think we need to clarify the Ko:Map_Features page and add some English
sentences, and I think we should consider including trunk roads.
In my mapping I have been trying to follow these rules, from the largest to
the smallest road:
1. Main highways or toll roads- motorway
These should be drawn as two ways, one way in each direction.
2. Roads with numbers in circles, i.e. (3) (24) (26) - trunk
Looking at the map of all of Korea there seems to be inconsistency here. I
suggest that all roads labelled with circles should be trunk.
3. Roads with numbers in square boxes [1084] [1089] - primary
Again, some inconsistency.
I haven't changed the classification of these roads in my local area yet as
they were already present when I started mapping.
4. Main roads through the town- secondary
These are generally wide and usually have more than one lane in each direction
5. Other roads- tertiary
I use tertiary for smaller roads with a yellow line down the middle, in and
out of town.
6. Streets- residential
In town, smaller roads without a yellow line
7. Roads- unclassified
These are non-residential roads with no yellow lines. I use this
classification for anything that a car can go on, including the concrete
roads running through rice fields.
8. Other roads- service
This is anything which is not a driveway, parking aisle or alley. I use this
for muddy tracks alongside a river, for example
service:driveway
A road into a car park or school grounds
service:alley
An alley that a car can go down
service:parking-aisle
Around carparks
footway
An alley a car can't get through, or any obvious footpath.
Sometimes I am not sure which classification I should use for a road, but this
is a fairly complete summary of what I do.
I have some more questions about tagging things in Korea, but I would like to
keep this thread focused on roads.
Thank you,
Andrew
