[Talk-nz] Environment Canterbury Imagery

Hi Mike / Andrew

I'm in the Topography team at LINZ and yes, currently rural areas are the same as what is available via LINZ, while urban areas have more recent imagery via Environment Canterbury.

As an aside, our Imagery Survey Index dataset provides an overview of useful metadata for imagery available via the LINZ Data Service: https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/95677-nz-imagery-survey-index/data/. The Licensor column shows which data is from Environment Canterbury, The Canterbury Aerial Imagery (CAI) Consortium and other local councils in the region.

Cheers
Daniel

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for working on that.

I'm a hydrologist at ECan and I've spoken with one of our gis guys recently about the aerial imagery. Apparently LINZ just accumulates the aerial imagery from the respective regional councils and is fed back out cos the official web service that you're familiar with. In other words, the LINZ imagery should be the same as the ECan imagery, although it could be possible that ECan's imagery could be temporary more up to date than LINZ. So it is certainly for to have that agreement set up.

Let me know if you've got any other questions.

Thanks again,
Mike

After a first misstep in https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/78808859 I approached Environment Canterbury for permission and they granted this https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/images/7/78/EnvironmentCanterbury_AerialimagerywaiversfortracingforOpenStreetMap.pdf.

I've updated the NZ Data Catalogue as well https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/New_Zealand_Data_Catalogue.

Working on getting this into editors out of the box at https://github.com/osmlab/editor-layer-index/pull/777.

Would be great if someone with local knowledge could comment on how this compares to the LINZ imagery.
