[Talk-nz] LINZ data import: JOSM and a question about tagging

Hi Alwyn,

There are currently 459 maraes mapped using the unofficial tag amenity=marae (https://wiki.osm.org/Tag:amenity=marae).
Most of these are Nodes from the original LINZ import, some of which have been converted to Areas so that additional detail can be mapped.

Unfortunately, no popular renderers support this tag...

Anyone is free to propose a different tag, such as amenity=community_centre + community_centre=marae, which many renderers already support.
There’s infomation about proposing a tag here: https://wiki.osm.org/Proposal_process

I would like to see an area tag named Marae.

The many Marae that I have been welcomed to have many discrete elements within them. Eating, Meeting and Residential buildings being the most common. Many now have medical centres. Less common are burial grounds within the area. But Parihaka, Taranaki is one such.

Not uncommon is a front palisade and a gathering area just before it.

So there is a variety that a single point does not convey.

And, of course, they are found throughout the length and breadth of Te Ika a Maui and more sparsely in Te Wai Pounamu

For the western side of the Wellington Region I can locate five and I am sure there quite a few here I do not know.

Hi Kyle,

Wouldn't those waterways be tagged as waterway=canal?
"Water races" seem by OSM definition to be canals:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:waterway%3Dcanal

The usage=irrigation tag seems appropriate.

Ditches seem to be defined as waterways designed to drain land.

Regards,
Mike

Hi all,

It’s now possible to use JOSM to import LINZ data, in addition to our modified version of RapiD (https://osm-nz.github.io/RapiD)
For those interested in using JOSM, you can download chunks of data from this page: https://osm-nz.github.io/josm

Separately, does anyone have suggestions on how to tag ‘Water Races’ – they are unique to Otago/Canterbury.
see https://www.selwyn.govt.nz/services/water/water-race for background info.
You can see the data here: https://koordinates.com/from/data.linz.govt.nz/layer/50369/

My initial thinking was:
waterway=ditch
usage=irrigation
description=water race

Additionally, any ideas for how to tag Redoubts? (there are only 32 in total, see https://koordinates.com/from/data.linz.govt.nz/layer/50322/).
Perhaps:
historic=archaeological_site
site_type=fortification
historic:civilization=colonialism ?
