[Talk-nz] Place names

Adding to what Aaron said, every sign I¡¯ve seen replaced or newly installed this year (including the big green/blue road signs from Waka Kotahi / NZTA) all use the official spelling with macrons. These include signs towards significant places like Whang¨¡rei, Taup¨­, Ngongotah¨¡, Paek¨¡k¨¡riki, P¨¡uatahanui, and many more (the last two I saw on Instagram, not in person).

I¡¯ve also seen local councils make a considerable effort to update signage (although I¡¯ve only visited Auckland, Wellington, and Taup¨­ in the past year).

Likewise, I prefer using official names when there are minor differences (like macrons). There don't seem to be any downsides, since any difference from local signage is unlikely to cause confusion among data consumers. Official names are also much easier to verify and maintain (esp. if there are local signs that contradict one another).

In my opinion the signposts would of been spelled on the signs without the macron due to historic reasons which have no relevance to this discussion now. I would expect as time goes on and damaged/old signs get replaced they will be remade with the offical spelling.

Certainly macrons are part of some official place names.

Are your names with macrons in the gazetteer?  If so, the "name" should contain the macron.

Care to share an example of the edit war?
