I understand about staying away from manipulating the zoom properties.  I
agree.

Eugene, you got my point exactly on what I wish the renderers will do about
low density POIs in an area.  You say they can do this anyway for AOIs, I
hope they will adapt the same algorithm for POIs soon.   Meanwhile, I will
look at look into this landuse=commercial approach.

Only problem I see with landuse=commercial is, one has to know the extents
of the area and add them properly on OSM.  Question ... can I just use a
very small circle polygon to represent a "point" then tag it as building=yes
or something?  I saw this done for Boracay's Boat Stations ...
