Hi guys,
While browsing the net for OSM news, I came across carNAVi (
http://www.car-navi.ph/ ), a local GPS-navigation systems provider. It seems
that they are using a modified OSM PH data for their maps. How can I tell?
Well, the have a non-descript ink to OSM.org in their website and the fact
that I recognize the shapes that I drew for Ayala Center Makati in their
screenshots (http://www.car-navi.ph/?p=98 ).
The thing is, OSM seems to be just one of their sources of data. Looking at
their Visayas screenshots, their road network is much more extensive than
what is available in OSM. I think we should contact them and ask where they
got their other data (to see if we can also get it for OSM if it's good
enough). But what I find troubling is that they seem to think that the OSM
data is CC-BY only, when it is actually CC-BY-SA (currently). See the
copyright section: http://www.car-navi.ph/?page_id=14
Secondly, check out this a-bit-recent blog post by Mike Hamlin of TeamAsia (
http://oaxserver.com/computerworld/gps-update/ ). It seems to contain a nice
summary of the state-of-the-art of GPS navigation in the Philippines. In it,
he mentions maning's Garmin GPS routable Philippines map (among others, like
Jan's data). What I find surprising is that TeamAsia handles the PR events
of Google here in the Philippines. In fact, Mike Hamlin gave a short talk
during the Google Map Maker Party that I attended recently so I was
surprised that he's already aware of OpenStreetMap. :-)
