[talk-ph] expanding the development of OSM-PH GPS Maps

Hi,
On the way to tagaytay and back home, my conversations with rally
revolved around the development of the Garmin GPS map based on
Openstreetmap data. Most garmin users here know I am distributing
this map regularly (either on a monthly or bi-monthly basis).
Download page is here: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/osmphil_garmin
I'm providing free download of this map simply because "I use it,
might as well share it". In some ways I can claim that because of
this, several Garmin users became active OSM contributors.
Furthermore, some GPS users provided new data, reported bugs/errors,
as well as feature enhancements. I intend to continue distributing
this map (for FREE!) as a by-product (among the hundreds we can
develop) of OSM-PH efforts. The grand plan is to create various map
styles depending on the purpose of the map (road, cycling, hiking,
marine navigation)
However, being alone in this endeavor, I lack the technical, time,
different kinds of GPS units and other resources to guarantee that the
GPS map will be distributed regularly and bug-free. In the true
spirit of OSM (and open source). I am looking for people to help me
develop and improve the GPS map. Through collaboration I am hopeful
we can improve our GPS maps and at the same time, have an insurance
that distribution will continue in case maning "gets bored",
"moved-on", or "got hit by a bus".
To clarify, I am not creating a separate group (or anything), I just
feel that although GPS is important for OSM-PH, developing garmin maps
(from OSM data) is a separate initiative. I don't want to use the
talk-ph list for discussions related to developing GPS map. The
talk-ph list should be used for mapping discussions related to OSM-PH.
In short the project is not a data collection project, that's OSM. It
is not a garmin gps software development project, that should be
mkgmap. It is a project to manage and customize GPS maps (probably
not only Garmin) for the Philippines.
I've setup a trac and svn to manage this:
https://free2.projectlocker.com/maning/osm_ph_garmin_map/trac/wiki
You can view it by using the following login credentials:
username: osmphgps AT gmail DOT com
password: osmphgps
(Sorry for the required login, this is free service under
projectlocker, currently, anonymous viewing is disabled. They
promised to add this feature soon)
No code or anything just yet. Just some ideas I scribbled lest I
forget them. There are several tasks and bug reports added already.
If you have other ideas just let me know.

maning
