+1 to  all the ideas mentioned.  Everything is possible, given enough
resources.  Part of the goal of the osmph garmin map is to create
"easy" to use tools for anyone to compile their own maps (and
hopefully share them).

The focus right now is to make the default map useful to everyone.  I
encourage you to at least try to compile your own maps and work on the
customizations.  I'd be glad to help you get started.  Later on, we
will try to compile specialized maps (cycling, mountaineering,
marine/sea).
