hi maning,
these are my personal thoughts about osm community and how we can improve osm. however,i stand to be corrected.
1. i've been submitting data to osm but up to now i still dont have the confidence if im doing it right. no one is telling me if what im doing is right or not. maybe a local forum osm-ph shouls be created or maybe there is but im not aware of it. or atleast a personal mail to really direct to the person concerned the things that needs to be corrected.
2. we have a vague standards as to the placement of the waypoints and what i noticed, not all waypoints uploaded form part of the map. most waypoints are later transformed into polygon. even the classifications of roads are a guessing game to me.
3. i believe that there are a lots of people who would like to contibute to osm since its an international site but theres no clear tutorial site. to name a few, like whats the difference of using josm and the osm edit tab portion? how to make polygons, what qualifies a waypoint to be a polygon?
so far these are all that i noticed about osm. hope you would accept my opinion as a constructive criticism

Dear everyone,
I am know collating my mental notes in preparation for the "State of
the PH" lightning talk for SOTM2011. And since this is a community
presentation, I might as well ask you on what we should be presenting.
The primary source materials of my talk is the wiki [0,1,2] and of
course, this list [3]. For sure the OSM-PH data has grown tremendously
in the the past 2 years. There a number of factors that may have
contributed to this growth. I would like to focus the presentation on
on 4 main points. Perhaps you can help me develop the discussion.
1. The osm-ph community. Who is the "community"? What characterize a
PH OSMer? How do we map? What are the innovative ways we do to
improve the map? Are the data users part of this community? Is the
talk-ph list and discussions here a representative sample of the osm-ph
community?
2. How do we use the data? Some sample of data useage we can
illustrate. Maybe a ph brewed mapping application? Or other ways you
have used the data? If there are any,
please provide a link or description and a screenshot.
3. Issues and concerns. Why are we growing in some areas but not
in others? How do you guage our relationship with other crowdsource
mapping initiative in the country (google mapmaker, roadguide.ph, wikimapia)?
4. The future. How do you see the state of PH data in a year or two?
What should be done to further improve and expand data coverage?

A typical OpenStreetMap
user/contributor in the Philippines is someone with a considerable
knowledge on Philippine geography (especially one's local area), gadgets that have something to do with cartography and navigation, and uses
OpenStreetMap to complete/accomplish certain goals, like finding a shortcut or discovering new places.

We map using conventional and sometimes unconventional techniques.

I haven't think of any [yet]

They are part of the community since they contribute to OSM indirectly [example: notes gathered from? persons who have recently traveled to a certain area]

Not really, though I believe that some contributors should participate in the discussions in the mailing list once in a while.
2. How do we use the data? Or other ways you have used the data?
OpenStreetMap was used as a reference in a thesis by a student from the University of the Philippines Los Ba?os (he graduated last April 2011) while A map based on OpenStreetMap data is used by a not-for profit organization and a barangay in Los Ba?os, Laguna. Some drivers and travelers use OpenStreetMap data as a reference tool.
3. Issues and concerns.

Maybe we haven't got enough media exposure. Maybe we haven't reached out to other mappers who need to refine their edits a little bit more (especially the tagging). Maybe they reside in an area without high-res imagery. Or maybe we have some of the same problems that Wikipedia has or used to have (For example, inaccurate data. Though other online maps have inaccurate data, I believe that we are being singled out since we aren't that "established" compared to Mapmaker and WIkimapia)

So far, only a couple of contributors from those sites have contributed to OpenStreetMap with varying results.
4.? The future.

We are going to breach the 100,000 kilometers of roads mark [based on a figure from http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ph/2011-August/003466.html ].
>What should be done to further improve and expand data coverage?
We can encourage college students, locals and bloggers to try out and edit and use OpenStreetMap while simultaneously promoting it through old and new media. We can also conduct 3-4 mapping parties (to improve OpenStreetMap's coverage in a certain area), at least 2-3 skillshares and/or meetups and a couple of meetings/talks/lectures per year. Who knows, we *might* host The State of the Map or the Asian version of it!
5. Other concerns
Maybe I should send them an email that their edits need refinement (Example: "You may try to tag [Name of a residential area] as place=locality or landuse=residential instead of place=village since the place=village tag is used for barangays" or "You don't have to add "name=Rice field" on a rice field and tag it as a meadow. Tag it as landuse=farm and crops=rice" or "town halls/municipios should be tagged as amenity=townhall and not place=village and name=[Name of town] Town Hall) instead of editing them directly. I think that I should give the less experienced ones an opportunity to "clean the milk that they've spilled"

on 4 main points.? Perhaps you can help me develop the discussion.
1. The osm-ph community.? Who is the "community"? What characterize a
PH OSMer? How do we map?? What are the innovative ways we do to
improve the map?? Are the data users part of this community?? Is the
talk-ph list and discussions here a representative sample of the osm-ph
community?
2. How do we use the data?? Some sample of data useage we can
illustrate.? Maybe a ph brewed mapping application? Or other ways you
have used the data? If there are any,
please provide a link or description and a
screenshot.
3. Issues and concerns.? Why are we growing in some areas but not
in others?? How do you guage our relationship with other crowdsource
mapping initiative in the country (google mapmaker, roadguide.ph, wikimapia)?
4.? The future.? How do you see the state of PH data in a year or two?
What should be done to further improve and expand data coverage?
