A store that sells clothes, hardware and farm supplies is definitely not
a convenience store. The wiki description of shop=general seems to very
precisely describe what you're talking about: "A general
store<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:general_store> is an
establishment selling various things. It is an old type of shop that
covered all, or nearly all, of the needs of the entire settlement. They
were popular and continue to exist mostly in rural or remote locations."
A variety store on the other hand is defined as "A retail shop that
sells inexpensive items, usually with a single price point for all items
in the store. Typical merchandise includes cleaning supplies, toys, and
confectionery", which is a very different concept.
