[Talk-us-massachusetts] Adding new open space parcels to the inventory

Good question Marc.
I'm using JOSM and use the Mass GIS L3 imagery layer to see both outlines
of open space and house numbers. It's available in the Imagery Preferences
tab. If you're using ID you can load this layer as "custom imagery" (found
under the "layer" icon)
You need to enter
http://tile.osm.osuosl.org/tiles/massgis_parcels/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png

The latest GIS data for all MA towns is available at

http://www.mass.gov/anf/research-and-tech/it-serv-and-
support/application-serv/office-of-geographic-information-massgis/
datalayers/download-level3-parcels.html
<http://www.mass.gov/anf/research-and-tech/it-serv-and-support/application-serv/office-of-geographic-information-massgis/datalayers/l3parcels.html>

Look for your town in the list and download file in the "ESRI Shapefiles"
column.
Unzip the downloaded file. There will be 9 files, open the M330TaxPar.shp
file (the 330 here is Westford), there are 2 shp files, you want the one
with the SHP extension, not the XLM file.

This will open in a new data layer in JOSM. Be careful here and *never*
upload that layer to OSM. Your OSM data should be downloaded to another
layer.
You can view both layers at the same time.

Contact me if you have a problem. One of the best thing going in
Massachusetts is people from trails committees taking ownership for their
towns. I suggest you make your trails highway=path and add operator=(your
trail committee name)

There's another way to get Mass Open Space data from Oliver. Let me know if
you're interested.
