I'm travelling in the SW and have noticed people mapping driveways as
areas for entire neighborhoods.
Looked a bit weird to me so I searched in MA to see how street areas were
being used.

I found a good example where Lars tied some footways together with
highway=footway, area=yes
http://www.openstreetmap.org/way/104864046#map=19/42.21536/-70.92431
I think his choice in this instance was better than using
highway=pedestrian, area=yes

Looks good to me and conveys the reality of the site and the routers are
not confused.

One of our new contributors, ndavidow
<http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/ndavidow> has been using
 highway=service,area=yes for large asphalt areas not identified for
parking.

There is a proposal for area:highway tag at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/area:highway

After a quick read I wasn't too enthusiastic.
