Cliffs have a certain alarming definition in everyday usage, as in the phrase "to drop off a cliff," indicating a grade so steep that it allows a fall through midair when traversed.

Now, the OSM Wiki does not always match their definitions to everyday definitions, which is why I always check online when working with new tags.

But I am hearing you say that the cliff attribute is acceptable on sand dunes, which would match neither definition. That is going to confuse anyone looking at those areas on OSM. Loose sand is not capable of forming a cliff structure. I had no trouble traversing the dunes out there, and I was surprised when later I looked at JOSM and saw they were cliffs. In my opinion, the grades at Chatham beach dunes were not even noteworthy steep gradients.

Meanwhile, there was a huge (huge) track of sand that had been washed away that still appeared on the maps, in the southeast direction. It might be a fun project to update the coastline in that area with updated sat maps.
