My understanding is that the painted dates tend to be tags by local high
school classes as opposed to survey dates. The marker between Carlisle
and Concord on Estabrook Road has a long list of dates that get into the
'0x' and possibly '1x' range.
That said, there are lots of similar markers out in the woods that are
unsullied.
