I've been an alternate for the selectmen and visited many bounds. We've
definitely painted them. Some pictures from long ago:

In addition to painting the last two digits of the year (usually a
multiple of 5, but not always), the letter for the town is repainted.
Graffiti and official marks haven't confused me. two official examples:
