Anyone interested in going with me to the Maptime Meeting on 3/20? I
usually drive from Bedford to Alewife and take the subway. Pizza is usually
provided.
Alan

Nearly every meeting at Maptime we go deep thinking about maps in a single
medium. Rather than focusing on one particular tool, this month Maptime
Boston regular Thad Kerosky will guide us in using the universal languages
of terrestrial geography and flat "geometry" to move from tool to tool and
produce a final product with the "best" creative tool for the job at each
step.

We will:
* collect data in physical meetup space on paper (bring a marker or thick
pen if you can),
* quickly trace it back into digital geo-data,
* join it with OpenStreetMap data,
* prepare our geodata layers in an interactive GIS tool,
* and export it to SVG format to combine with other line art and finishing
tweaks.

Bring a laptop with your favorite tools and try to have Inkscape and QGIS
installed if you don't already. ArcGIS, Sketch, and Illustrator could also
be used. Don't worry if you can't use any of those: we'll have web-only
options as well.

We might chat about some other eclectically divergent workflows from
shaking data out of its basic context if time permits (e.g. hillshades in
Blender, or remixed population geo-data).

Websites we'll use:

---------------------

Maptime is, rather literally, time for mapmaking. Our mission is to open
the doors of cartographic possibility to anyone interested by creating a
time and space for collaborative learning, exploration, and map creation
using mapping tools and technologies.

This open learning environment for all levels and degrees of knowledge
offers intentional support for the beginner. Maptime is simultaneously
flexible and structured, creating space for workshops, ongoing projects
with a shared goal, and independent/collaborative work time.

Inspiration for Maptime comes from both hack nights and knitting circles.
Both are models of spaces for people to create and learn together. Our goal
is to provide this space with an open heart and without pretension. You can
bring your own projects to work on, or just hang out and socialize or ask
questions. Some people are experts, and some people are just getting
started, but all of us are learning, so why not do it together?

Maptime is hands-on, so don't forget to bring your laptop!
