I tried with a Vista HCx and didn't get it to work.
I have 1.3 coping strategies:
build my own maps of new england with splitter and mkgmap. create
GMAPI format files. install into roadtrip on a mac. (script on
request, or see the mkgmap-dev archives.)
use garmin mapinstall to merge my tiles, proprietary maps, and
free-beer garmin maps from the web (eg. NWTrails).
(sometimes) just put the gmapsupp.img with all of new england on the
device, renaming as Bill is doing, but I don't bother with subdirs.
All of new england is only 100M. I could put it up for download, but my
map has broken interstate routing since I merged 6 cloudmade extracts.
There are also ways w/o garmin software to merge multiple .img files
into one. sendmap can do it, and mkgmap might as well but I'm not sure.
