Maybe a group Skype connection would work instead of a conference call.

I'm particularly interested in an online mapping event due to the fact that
when everyone is trying to map on one WiFi connection it doesn't work so
well.

Maybe for tackling a National Park we could do a group trip out with a
rented van where people can loan out GPS devices and then hike/bike/drive
around. Then the next day do an online Mapping event with a group IM on
skype or something.  That way we get new data and there will still be
support and explanation into how to upload and edit the data.
