the issue there is that state route numbers along w/ 3 digit interstate spurs and beltways are only unique within a state and within a system. i.e. does ref=128 refer to the ma state oute thhe state route somewwhere else ror the first spur off I28

I agree with putting just the number there.

Let the renderers handle whatever abbreviations and whatnot.
