Mapping party sounds great, hopefully its a warm winter! I'll be around over the holidays and can put time into getting this together. I've never arranged one before, though, so any veterans would be very much appreciated!

Yes, I would definitely want to be sure that any information going into OSM isn't causing legal agitations for people.

The only legal provisions I've been able to find for the data hosted on NYC OpenData (previously the NYC DataMine) hosted on Socrata is located here: http://www.nyc.gov/html/data/terms.html

I've pasted the bulk of it below with the interesting parts bolded and some personal interpretations marked in red. Suffice it to say, the current stuff is completely unworkable as has been mentioned before.

-- pasted content --

Submitting City entities are the authoritative source of data available on NYC Open Data. These entities are responsible for data quality and retain version control of datasets and feeds accessed on the Site. Data may be updated, corrected, overwritten and/or refreshed at any time. The anticipated update frequency is indicated for each dataset on the Site. Historical datasets will not be retained.

The City reserves the right to discontinue providing any datasets or feeds on NYC Open Data at any time. The City may require a user to terminate any and all display, distribution or other use of any or all of the datasets or feeds for any reason including, without limitation, violation of these Terms of Use or other terms defined by City entities contributing data to the Site.
(this is uniformly bad for us)

The user should report any errors or problems accessing data on NYC Open Data. (Bryce hasn't had any satisfaction by going through this process, it would be interesting to see if, pending appropriate licensing, having the data in OSM and being worked on with someone reporting problems and changes 'upstream' on a semi-regular basis forces a change in this)

Users providing software applications using data supplied on the NYC.gov Open Data must do the following:
Notify the City. (unrealistic)
Include the following disclaimers at the site where the application can be accessed or downloaded:

"The City of New York can not vouch for the accuracy or completeness of data provided by this web site or application or for the usefulness or integrity of the web site or application. This site provides applications using data that has been modified for use from its original source, NYC.gov, the official web site of the City of New York."
(the latter half of this paragraph provides some hope, as the Open Database License has a similar provision)

Comply with any additional terms defined by the City entity or entities providing data used by the application, including, without limitation, requirements to include additional citations or disclaimers at the site of the application. (i.e: they decide at any given time that they want out)
