Sadly, because of the perceived role as "authoritative tagging 
guideline", some people focus their attention on writing things on the 
Wiki rather than on mapping, which occasionally leads to the Wiki 
containing absurd rules that have little basis in OSM reality.

Sometimes the collected experience of a thousand mappers speaks to you 
through the wiki, and sometimes it's a single loony speaking.

If an experienced mapper tells you to RTFW then it is probably relevant. 
If you find something on the Wiki that makes you go "uh, guess I'll 
change the tags in the whole of the US then" then you better ask someone 
for another opinion ;)
