As I'm guessing you're far younger than I, and so this happened much closer to the present (and those darn SoCal "influencers" have come marching up to Santa Cruz to infect our perfect methods of speech with their horrific slur of putting "The" in front of talking about a highway), you are likely correct.

"Confounded," indeed!

This has been fun, but I also agree that this isn't specific to California, SOUTHERN California, Michigan, the USA, or any region in particular.  It is, I suspect, a great deal for the reason we have so many flavors of "name" tags (and why we should use them correctly).
