For things like road names, ref formats, and addresses that inherently 
differ between countries, the kinds of consistency that matter are 
principles like verifiability and maintainability, not the specifics 
like whether to use a hyphen or a space in the ref. Systematic names 
aren't unique to the U.S., but they are particularly prevalent here, and 
this discussion might well be influenced by local considerations like 
the MUTCD and E911.

If we do expand this discussion globally, we're going to have a talk 
about how it's possible to drive westbound on "East County Road 00 North 
South" (not to be confused with ref=US 35;SR 22). [1]
