I agree, Mike! This effort is not about removing things from OSM that land
managers would prefer not to be there. Some people may favor that, but it
would be an exercise in futility. The issue is really with map renderings
that show a single line style for all types of trails when this is not a
good representation of reality. The purpose of the working group is to get
land managers, mappers, and map designers together to learn from each other
and improve trail maps made from OSM data. We may find all the necessary
tags are already in common use (informal=yes, access=no, etc) and all that
is needed is for map designers to adjust their rendering based on these
values and to update their data more frequently from OSM. We also may find
that some additional tags would be helpful to express the full richness of
the types of trails/paths that exist, and to ensure that map designers can
display the information in a clear way to their users. We welcome your
input.
