openstreetmap-americana uses very different technologies than 
openstreetmap-carto, but hopefully it lay the groundwork for the 
latter's support in other ways. So far we've been able to implement 
relation-based shield rendering in a number of countries [1], but 
there's a long way to go in terms of raising awareness among mappers 
about how this data is used.

In many countries, route relations are a labor of love by one or two 
individual mappers, because their work is largely invisible. We've been 
reaching out to these mappers for assistance in cleaning up the tagging. 
If an American-focused renderer can fill out support for shields in a 
majority of the world's countries, with local support, that will make a 
stronger case that it's a baseline expectation for a renderer with 
global ambitions.
