D. Joe, I’d also suggest taking a look at the decade(s)-long (somewhere between 11 and 16 years, I’d say) efforts (serious efforts, multi-person, careful-listening-taking-place efforts, I’d even call them a pretty good version of “nationwide” efforts…) to “harmonize” the (somewhat artificial in reality but expressed as a somewhat-necessity in OSM) concept of admin_level in the USA [1]. As one of the Contributors who has both listened to, helped to craft, written wiki, done a lot of listening, done a lot of interpreting of admin_level, done a lot of opining myself, done some suggesting that at times it would be useful for a political scientist to examine what we at least give an honest “college try” to doing here (and it’s “not terrible”) when it comes to expressing place, population, governmental hierarchy and so on in OSM in the USA, I look at Kevin’s efforts, nod my head at his usual excellent and thoughtful approach and (with a minor suggestion he seems to like) offer him two thumbs up. As do others here.
Kevin has participated, I have, Greg has, MANY have. If you don’t know that history, and its careful, (somewhat fragile) built consensus, please go give it a read and see how it isn’t perfect, but it “holds together.” I, personally would find quite welcome any suggestions you have to improve this. I (quite deeply) trust Kevin’s very demonstrated knowledge and “powers” (of experience, deduction) to make top-notch contributions to this knowledge for “greater” New York. AND as it has been explained, this is a “stopgap” for nodes only. It is (in my opinion, while not having seen it yet in the map) even only merely described to me, an excellent (albeit incremental) improvement, one of the highest order, being polished to a rather high gloss by Kevin as he describes it.
If/as you can sharpen and explain your objections (and even better, though it is asking a lot), any possible improvements (whether immediate or longer-term), I am personally listening. I think this list would find your insights interesting, too. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts widely.
