I gave up grass because of its strange interface, and is now using
qgis to visualize the info instead.

Try qgis. It is capable of importing lots of shape files without
increasing in size. GPX import on the other hand uses lots of memory.

I use gpx2shp instead to avoid the memory issue with qgis. :)
