[Openstreetmap] data logging in cities

How do you log tracks in cities?

Earlier this month I tried to log some inner city streets in Cologne
(pedestrian areas).
Most of the time I had rather bad deviations (most tracks are unusable)
Probably the streets were too narrow or the builds to tall.

The "London Free Map" page mentions a "window of opportunity".
Is it possible to calculate this time window for diffent locations?
I think it should be (more or less) easy by using almanac informations.
