Hi all,
I've just joined the list...I've been banging on about this idea for ages
to anyone who will listen - I'm so glad that somebody's finally got it
together, though slightly miffed that I was beaten to it :)

I was working on something similar last year, using a combination of
Geonet and Census data to put together http://ukgaz.oxhut.co.uk/ -
basically a local-authority based listing of every place in the country I
could find. Also, to this end, I've been collecting out-of-copyright UK
maps, reckoning that at least 80% of the country hasn't changed since
WWII. I have all these ready to scan in when I finally get my scanner
fixed!

Another idea I had was involving schools to do local mapping, rather like
the old BBC Domesday project. Has anybody considered this? I'm sure it can
be squared with the National Curriculum somehow :)

Here's offering all the help I can.

Cheers,
	Ben.
