[Openstreetmap] alternative to e002shp?

after proposing DCW - http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/ to  Jeremy
yesterday, i diged out my old downloads from there.

grass5 imported them without problems, but now i have grass6 (needs
avcimport - but even then it doesnt import) and some other programs that
all prefer shape files.

i tried to convert the e00 (ascii) files to shape with e002shp
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/shapetools/) but it crashes while
reading the IFO (data table) section.

qgis doesnt import e00 - i found a plugin but it uses e002shp

is there any other converter?
