[Openstreetmap] Downloading OSM data

Hi there. I'm interested in playing around with some visualizations of the
OSM data, in particular using programmable graphics hardware to do database
queries, different projections, colouring schemes etc.

How do I go about getting the data? I found the Wiki page about the REST api
and created an account, but I get "file not found" when I try to access urls
like the one below:
http://emailaddress:password@www.openstreetmap.org/api/0.1/map?bbox=51.47,-0.26,51.58,-0.03<http://emailaddress:password@www.openstreetmap.org/api/0.1/>

Is the data used in the printed London maps in the database? Is the track
data in time order?

Cheers,

Simon.
