I just thought it might be easy to store changes in the applet for a
while and 'save' to the server on request - if it's tricky it doesn't
matter that much.

Is there a quick way to get the number of tracks in a given area?
if so I was thinking there might be a way of getting speed and
functionality by showing tracks for the whole display if under 5000 -
then try again for a smaller area - and maybe trying again once or twise.
Part of the problem was that I didn't understand at first *why* no
tracks were appearing - some message might be useful.
