Just learn the Cyrillic alphabet and you'll be able to read the place
names, at the least.  Doesn't tend to be that much else in maps anyway.

It's not that hard and will put you in good stread for travels in
Eastern Europe.  Certainly when I went around Russia a bit a couple of
years ago, only the very central part of Moscow had non-Cyrillic signs. 
And even they were patchy.
